July 18-25, 2008

When you arrive at Sugar Pine Point, take a deep breath of air! This is Family Camp, a week in the woods with hundreds of great folks from our NorthCreek Church family. So whether you're just checking out what Family Camp is all about, or are registered to join us and are looking for specific camp information, you've come to the right place. We look forward to seeing you up at Tahoe!

SUGAR PINE POINT DIRECTIONS:
From Interstate 80 take Hwy 89 to Tahoe City. Hwy 89 turns right (south) at the "Y." The Sugar Pine Point Campground turn off will be on the right, past the town of Tahoma. If you go to Meeks Bay you’ve gone too far. Turn around. From Hwy 50, at South shore at Lake Tahoe take Hwy 89 north, continue north past Meeks Bay. The turn off for the campground will be on the left.

CHECK-IN: 2:00 p.m. is the official check in time. Tell the Ranger that you are with NCC Family Camp, and that you are already paid. Each camping site will receive two parking stickers.

YOUR NEXT STOP IS The Check in site where you will confirm your site assignment with Julianna Teach at the check-in bulletin board (for a campground map, click here). Any changes to camp site assignments will be posted there. Please check your site number and check off the "arrived" box on the bulletin board. You will receive information about recreation opportunities, and we will know you have arrived safely. Check out the information board for any last minute announcements, then find your site and set up camp.

PARKING: Only two vehicles are allowed per site. A vehicle can mean the following: car, truck, tent trailer, or RV. Extra vehicles must be parked at the outside lot by the ranger station. Expect to pay standard park fee per day per "extra" vehicle.

OUR MORNING CHAPEL SPEAKER is Doug Stolhand

  • Doug Stolhand served as a pastor of Student Ministries at NorthCreek Church for 12 years.  Currently Doug serves on the International Leadership Team of the EFCA-IM. He is leading in the development of Live0, a new thrust to engage 18-30 year-olds and “finishers” in serving for two years on a compassion platform in strategic locations around the world and always along side of an existing church planting effort.

OUR WORSHIP TEAM is comprised of the Newton family of Phil and Tamara Newton - who have been married 24 years, and who have a wonderful story of how God brought them together, using their common love of music. They both toured around the world in Christian musical groups before they were married. Currently, Phil is a software engineer and he and his wife home school their children - Marcella, Hannah, Carter, Sophia, Colby, and Chasewell - all of whom sing and play musical instruments (except young Chasewell who is almost 5). They also perform in many local theatres in our area.

THE CHILDREN’S CHAPEL TEAM look forward to spending about 45 minutes with the children, ages 5-11, after each morning chapel prayer and worship time. This will enable the adults and teens to focus on the teaching each day, Saturday, July 19 through Thursday, July 24. In order for the program to be a safe, fun, and nurturing environment for so many children, we will need four adult volunteers to assist us in Children’s Chapel each morning. We are asking each family with children ages 5-11 to consider taking a turn to help with this ministry. If you have children, please consider serving with Children's Chapel at least one day of Family Camp. Thanks for your help!

FANTASTIC CRAFTS: We have designed and prepared some fantastic crafts for the kids. We will be looking for helpers to serve during craft time.

FRIDAY NIGHT, JULY 18: Our welcome campfire will begin at 8 p.m. where there will be a short introduction of the planned talks for the week. Bring your camp chairs.

SAND HARBOR: On Monday morning, July 21, the campground is vacated by 9 am so that everyone arrives by 10:00 a.m. at Sand Harbor Beach, Nevada. Parking at Sand Harbor is very limited and we must arrive early to secure our sites. Chapel starts at 10:00 a.m. This is the highlight of the week for most of our campers. Having Chapel on the beach surrounded by the stunning vistas of Lake Tahoe is an awesome experience. After Chapel we will start the BBQ fires and plan for lunch at 12:00 noon. The Planning Team will serve ice cold watermelon and BBQ hotdogs with all the condiments. We will also provide the plates, napkins, etc. for all. We ask each family to bring a LARGE salad/vegetable dish and BIG dessert to share with everyone. Bring your own drinks for your family. After lunch we will have organized activities such as raft races, sand sculptures, and marble hunt.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON BAPTISM: If you would like to be baptized this year at Family Camp, please email or call (925.210.9036) Kathy Preeg
in the church office as soon as possible. You will need to complete a baptism application, as well as attend the next baptism class on Sunday, June 10. Everyone who desires to be baptized at Family Camp must attend the June 10 baptism class.

ACTIVITIES: Saturday through Thursday bring your camp chairs to our outdoor chapel starting at 9:15 a.m., for about an hour. Children’s Chapel runs during the last half of our chapel time.  Mid-day activities are of your own choosing. Biking, hiking, boating, rafting, swimming, sunning, sightseeing, and napping are among the many choices available. Families may want to go alone or hook up with other families.

FRIDAY, JULY 25, BREAKFAST: On Friday morning, Floyd Berry will prepare a delicious pancake breakfast to fuel us for the long trip home. WHAT ELSE: Bring sunscreen, hats, towels, rope for clothesline, beach gear, sun screen, camping gear, food, (there is a Safeway and Albertson’s at Tahoe City), utensils, camp chairs, mosquito repellant, sun screen, flashlights. Remember to bring warm clothes because it can get VERY cold at night. All meals are provided by your own family and shared with assorted friends, bugs, birds, squirrels and bears. (See below for a list of "What to Bring").

BEARS: That brings us to the issue of BEARS! There are bears at Lake Tahoe. It is illegal to leave food out. There is a huge fine that the rangers can levy if they so desire. All food must be placed in the steel boxes that are provided at each campsite. We can attest to the fact that bears recognize coolers as sources of food, so please cover them in your vehicle or lock them up!

SAFETY ISSUES: All bikers are to wear helmets and they must not ride through the campsites. Drivers and bikers are to take extreme caution for other bikers. Also, caution your children about the danger of fire when using campfires.
